I am participating in Jami Attenberg’s #1000wordsofsummer and this was the little blurb that I wrote to today!
An argument that I hear often is that an anti-racist education coddles BIPOC students. That making curriculum that is culturally relevant for them is too easy, allowing them to use and develop their voice without sentence frames will result in incoherent essays. These same critics fail to acknowledge that while these students are boxed out of courses by their teachers (like Nikola Jokić, teachers are never letting students rebound), white students with a command of standard English and who live with college-educated parents that have and have read “the classics” in their homes are the ones currently being coddled by the curriculum in the name of high expectations and standards.

So often, what is white is deemed universal when it is, in fact, parochial.
